Becoming an Effective Legislative Advocate

  • Visit the Indiana General Assembly
  • Find out How a Bill is Passed
  • Contact Information for Your Legislator(s)
    • Tips When Calling Your Representative or Senator
      • Identify yourself and ask if this is a convenient time to discuss legislative issues.
      • State your reason for calling. If you are calling about a particular bill, refer to it by number and briefly explain the intent of the bill.
      • State your position and support your position with factual information. Tell your legislator how the bill or issue will affect you and others in your district.
      • Ask your legislator to support or oppose the bill/issue in accordance with your position.
      • Keep your call as brief as possible. Thank your elected official for his/her time.
    • If You Are Unable to Reach Your Legislator
      • Talk to one of his/her staff members or leave a message.
      • If you leave a message, make it brief and be sure to include your request to support or oppose a specific bill (include the number of the bill) or issue. Leave your name, address, and telephone number.
