History

- In 1996, after several years of collaborative maternal and child health efforts, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), the Indiana Chapter of the March of Dimes and hundreds of individuals and organizations developed the Indiana Perinatal Systems Strategic Plan for the 21st Century (June 1996).
- This action plan contained recommendations to reduce Indiana's infant mortality rate and to promote optimal health for pregnant women and for infants up to age one.
- During a series of town forums and regional and state task force meetings, each Indiana community expressed and explored its particular challenges and needs. These needs formed the basis for the Strategic Plan.
- IPN evolved as a means to implement the plan and was established and funded by ISDH in October 1996.
- In 1998, the Indiana Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Perinatal Association (incorporated since 1989), voted to merge with IPN.
- The name of the new not-for-profit was amended to the Indiana Perinatal Network, Inc.
